2012 PFC AWARDS PROGRAM
PFC’s Mandate to Promote Evidence-Based Research
The Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada (PFC), a nationally registered charitable organization, funds physiotherapy research in Canada to improve mobility, health and well-being.
More specifically, PFC supports:
- Research on the effectiveness of physiotherapeutic interventions and approaches
- Research on biomedical and psychosocial factors that contribute to long-term disability
- The creation and validation of tools needed to objectively measure the effectiveness of physiotherapeutic interventions
These efforts are oriented to the priorities of practicing physiotherapists with particular attention given to new research arising from current clinical issues and projects that may initiate new research endeavours by clinicians and students.
Some of these past research efforts funded by PFC include:
- Development of a Community-Based Exercise Program for People with Parkinson’s Disease
- Cultural Competence of Health Care Professionals
- Use of a Computerized Exercise Program in a Rehabilitation Setting
- Relationship Between Weight-bearing when Rising from a Chair and When Walking in Persons with Stroke
- How Do Infants Adapt to Loading of the Limb During the Swing Phase of Stepping.
- Evaluation of Spasticity and Motor Control of the Arm in Individuals with Hemiparesis
Each grant administered and awarded by PFC must pass a rigorous internal and external review process, and must address relevant subjects as identified within the physiotherapy community.

1. Acupuncture Division Research Grant
The CPA Acupuncture Division has established the Acupuncture Division Grant for Physiotherapy Research in order to build awareness of and capacity for research to enhance evidence-based practice. The award is meant to provide seed funding for pilot or feasibility physiotherapy research projects that involve acupuncture. The award is restricted to CPA members in good standing. Physiotherapy clinicians who have a research project for which they are seeking funding are encouraged to team up with an experienced researcher (Principle Investigator) when applying for this Award. One grant of $5,000 will be awarded in 2012.

2. Alberta Research Award
The Alberta Research Award (ARA) was established as a result of an amalgamation of the Congress Profits Fund of the Edmonton District, the Special Projects Fund of the Calgary District, and the Celia Bartzen Fund. The ARA will provide funding for physiotherapy research projects with special consideration made for projects from Alberta. Successful applicants must be members of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. One grant of up to $5,000 is awarded.

3. Alun Morgan Memorial Research Grant in Orthopaedic Physiotherapy
This fund was established by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in honour of Alun Morgan, one of the founders of its Orthopaedic Division and a pioneer of manual therapy in Canada. Awards are made in support of physiotherapy research projects that deal with the management of musculoskeletal problems in Canada. Grants of up to $5,000 each are awarded.

4. Ann Collins Whitmore Memorial Scholarship
Ann Collins Whitmore was a dedicated physiotherapist who served her patients in the Canadian Military during the Second World War and continued to practice, though legally blind, through to the end of her career. This award will be granted to a physiotherapist enrolled in either a Ph.D. or Masters program, who must also be involved in a research project as part of the academic requirements for completion of their program. Special consideration will be made for blind physiotherapists. Scholarships of up to $4,000 are awarded.

5. Ann Collins Whitmore Entry Student Competition
Each School of Physiotherapy is invited to submit the top research paper from entry-level students. Three students, representing each of the top three papers to be selected by PFC’s Scientific Awards Committee, will be provided with a travel bursary of $1500 to attend and present their paper at Congress 2012 in Saskatoon, SK. The winner, who will be announced at Congress 2012 will receive a $1,000 grant.
6. B.E. Schnurr Memorial Fund Research Grant
This fund was established by the family, friends and colleagues of Bodil Elizabeth Schnurr and will provide funding for physiotherapy research projects with special consideration made for projects from Alberta. Grants of up to $3,000 each are awarded.

7. CAMPT Founders Award
The award will recognize excellence in research promoting the advancement of clinical practice of manual and neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy. Research must fall under one of the following categories Prognosis, Diagnosis, Efficacy, Causation or Knowledge translation. The amount of the award will be $5,000.

8. The Saint Elizabeth Research Grant for Community Based Projects
The Saint Elizabeth Research Grant for Community Based Projects was established in 2007 by Community Rehab to support community based projects involving children or adults. The Grant provides support for physiotherapy research projects that advance rehabilitation at the community level, such as rehabilitation services to support the elderly remaining in their homes, facilitation of early discharge from acute care hospitals, or the prevention and management of chronic disease in the community. Awards are made annually for up to $5,000 each. The awards are seed funds for mainly pilot or feasibility projects. Preference will be given to applicants heading up community based projects in Ontario.

9. Constance Beattie Memorial Fund (CBMF) Bursary Program
This fund was established in 1949 by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in honour of Constance Beattie who died in a plane crash at the age of 24 while serving as a dedicated physiotherapist in Canada’s north. The bursary is administered by the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada. Bursaries are made available to successful applicants for continuing education courses that are relevant to their career goals. Bursaries of up to $1,500 are awarded.

10. NSD-PFC Joint Award for Physiotherapy Research in the Neurosciences
The NSD-PFC Award for Physiotherapy Research in the Neurosciences was established in 2006 as a result of a joint effort between the Neurosciences Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada. The award of $3,000, jointly funded by NSD and PFC, is seed funding for mainly pilot or feasibility projects in the neurosciences. The successful applicant must be a member in good standing of the Neurosciences Division.

11. Ontario Physiotherapy Association Kim Wolny Research Grant (OPARG)
In memory of Kim Wolny, Past President of OPA and recognizes innovative leadership in the development of the profession in Ontario. This grant provides support for physiotherapy research projects that focus on new and emerging roles and programs for physiotherapists in the Ontario health system, and investigates potential effects of such roles/programs on health outcomes for Ontarians and health system effectiveness. Projects across the continuum of health services will be considered, though projects with a focus on decreasing wait times, primary health/primary health care, chronic disease management or health promotion/disease prevention will be given preference. An award of $10,000 will be made annually to an applicant for an Ontario-based research project.

12. OrthoCanada Research Award in Neck and Back Rehabilitation and Core Stability
The OrthoCanada Research Award in Neck and Back Rehabilitation and Core Stability was established by OrthoCanada to encourage development of treatments related to back and neck rehabilitation and core stability. Awards are made for up to $5,000 each. The award is for seed funding for mainly pilot or feasibility projects.

13. The Pain Science Division Grant for Pain Research
Pain is a prevalent and growing disease in all parts of the world. It affects all ages and to date has no known cure. Treatment is aimed at improving patients’ quality of life. To help advance knowledge in this disease the pain science division is offering a biennial research grant of $5,000. The grant will provide seed money for mainly pilot projects awarded to physiotherapists doing research to advance the knowledge of pain. A specific eligibility criterion for this grant is that successful applicants must be a member in good standing of the Pain Science Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

14. Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada Research Grant
Funds Research Grants to: encourage the development of new technology and treatment methods; develop methods for the prevention and early recognition of physical disabilities; evaluate the effectiveness of new and existing treatment methods; and encourage epidemiological studies on the incidence and prevalence of physical disabilities. One grant of $4,000 will be awarded in 2012.

15. The Dominion Physiotherapy Research Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2007 thanks to a five-year commitment from The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company (The Dominion). PFC is pleased to be able to work with The Dominion in offering this physiotherapy research scholarship. It is being offered to post licensure physiotherapy students at the Masters and PhD level who are involved in a physiotherapy research project that is part of the academic requirements for completion of their program. One award will be made of up to $4,500.
