2010 PFC AWARDS PROGRAM

PFC’s Mandate to Promote Evidence-Based Research

The Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada (PFC), a nationally registered charitable organization, funds physiotherapy research in Canada to improve mobility, health and well-being.

More specifically, PFC supports:

These efforts are oriented to the priorities of practicing physiotherapists with particular attention given to new research arising from current clinical issues and projects that may initiate new research endeavours by clinicians and students.

Each grant administered and awarded by PFC must pass a rigorous internal and external review process, and must address relevant subjects as identified within the physiotherapy community.

2010 NEW AWARDS

Seniors’ Health Division Research Grant in Older Adult Health

With today’s aging population, issues related to mobility and quality of life are becoming prime concerns for physiotherapists treating older adults. To help physiotherapists increase their body of knowledge around treatment protocols, the Seniors’ Health Division will offer the Seniors Heath Division Research Grant in Older Adult Health. The $2,500 grant provides seed funding for pilot projects that address clinical research with immediate relevance for issues pertaining to the quality of life of older adults. Applicants are encouraged to focus on areas which will affect the immediate practice of physiotherapists working with clients over the age of 65.

2010 STUDENT AWARDS

Ann Collins Whitmore Entry Student Competition

Each School of Physiotherapy is invited to submit the top research paper from entry-level students. Three students, representing each of the top three papers to be selected by PFC’s Scientific Awards Committee, will be provided with a travel bursary of $1500 to attend and present their paper at Congress 2010 in St. John’s, Nfld. The winner, who will be announced at Congress 2010 will receive a $1,000 grant.

The Paediatric Division Physiotherapy Research Grant Related to Child and Adolescent Health Issues

The Paediatric Division Physiotherapy Research Grant Related to Child and Adolescent Health Issues is once again being offered in 2010. The purpose of the grant is to encourage research initiatives that will develop physiotherapy interventions in the treatment of child and adolescent issues related to neonatal care, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiorespiratory, rheumatology, oncology, pain clinics and amputees. The $2,000 award is for seed funding for mainly pilot or feasibility projects.

OrthoCanada Research Award in Neck and Back Rehabilitation and Core Stability

The OrthoCanada Research Award in Neck and Back Rehabilitation and Core Stability was established in 2010 by OrthoCanada to encourage development of treatments related to back and neck rehabilitation and core stability. Awards are made for up to $5,000 each. The award is for seed funding for mainly pilot or feasibility projects.

HSFC/PFC Scholarship in Physiotherapy Research

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) is collaborating with the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada (PFC) to offer the HSFC/PFC Scholarship in Physiotherapy Research Relevant to Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke. This Scholarship will recognize one Masters-Level ($4,000) and one Doctoral-Level ($5,000) highly qualified academic researcher at the early stages of their career who are pursuing physiotherapy research training in an area relevant to cardiovascular disease or stroke care and rehabilitation. The Scholarship will be administered by PFC.

Community Rehab Research Grant for Community-based Physiotherapy Projects

The Community Rehab Physiotherapy Research Grant (CRPRG) was established in 2007 by Community Rehab to support community based projects involving children or adults. The Grant provides support for physiotherapy research projects that advance rehabilitation at the community level, such as rehabilitation services to support the elderly remaining in their homes, facilitation of early discharge from acute care hospitals, or the prevention and management of chronic disease in the community. Awards are made annually for up to $5,000 each. The awards are seed funds for mainly pilot or feasibility projects. Preference will be given to applicants heading up community based projects in Ontario.

PABC Research Grant for Physiotherapy Research in B.C.

The Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia (PABC) has established the PABC Research Grant for Physiotherapy Research in B.C. in order to build awareness about the importance of research in building evidence-based practices. The award is meant to provide seed funding for pilot or feasibility physiotherapy research projects conducted in British Columbia. The PABC Research Grant is restricted to PABC members in good standing. One grant of up to $5,000 will be awarded in 2010.

NSD-PFC Joint Award for Physiotherapy Research in the Neurosciences

The NSD-PFC Award for Physiotherapy Research in the Neurosciences was established in 2006 as a result of a joint effort between the Neurosciences Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada. The award of $2,000, jointly funded by NSD and PFC, is seed funding for mainly pilot or feasibility projects in the neurosciences. The successful applicant must be a member in good standing of the Neurosciences Division.

2010 PFC CORE AWARDS PROGRAM

The Dominion Physiotherapy Research Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2007 thanks to a five-year commitment from The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company (The Dominion). PFC is pleased to be able to work with The Dominion in offering this physiotherapy research scholarship. It is being offered to post licensure physiotherapy students at the Masters and PhD level who are involved in a physiotherapy research project that is part of the academic requirements for completion of their program. One award will be made of up to $4,000.

Constance Beattie Memorial Fund (CBMF) Bursary Program

This fund was established in 1949 by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in honour of Constance Beattie who died in a plane crash at the age of 24 while serving as a dedicated physiotherapist in Canada’s north. The bursary is administered by the Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada. Bursaries are made available to successful applicants for continuing education courses that are relevant to their career goals. Bursaries of up to $1,500 are awarded.

Alberta Research Award

The Alberta Research Award (ARA) was established as a result of an amalgamation of the Congress Profits Fund of the Edmonton District, the Special Projects Fund of the Calgary District, and the Celia Bartzen Fund. The ARA will provide funding for physiotherapy research projects with special consideration made for projects from Alberta. Successful applicants must be members of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. One grant of up to $5,000 will be awarded.

Alun Morgan Memorial Research Award in Orthopaedic Physiotherapy

The AMMRF was established in 1989 by the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in honour of Alun Morgan, one of the founders of the Orthopaedic Division and a pioneer of manual therapy in Canada. The fund provides support for physiotherapy research projects that deal with the management of musculoskeletal problems in Canada. Awards are made for up to $5,000 each. The awards are seed funds for mainly pilot or feasibility projects. A specific eligibility criterion for this award is that successful applicants must be a member in good standing of the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

B.E. Schnurr Memorial Fund Research Grant

This fund was established by the family, friends and colleagues of Bodil Elizabeth Schnurr, who was a physiotherapist at Foothills Hospital in Calgary and who dedicated much of her working life to the development of the profession. The award will provide funding for physiotherapy research projects with special consideration made for projects from Alberta. One grant of up to $7,200 will be awarded in 2010.

Ann Collins Whitmore Memorial Scholarship (ACWMS) Awards

Ann Collins Whitmore was a dedicated physiotherapist who served her patients in the Canadian Military during the Second World War and continued to practice, though legally blind, through to the end of her career. This scholarship will be granted to a physiotherapist enrolled in either a PhD or post-professional Masters program, who must also be involved in a research project as part of the academic requirements for completion of their program. Special consideration will be made for blind physiotherapists. Awards are made up to $4,000.

PFC Research Grants

Donor funds are used to provide research grants that support the health, mobility and well-being of Canadians. Research Grants to: encourage the development of new technology and treatment methods; develop methods for the prevention and early recognition of physical disabilities; evaluate the effectiveness of new and existing treatment methods; and encourage epidemiological studies on the incidence and prevalence of physical disabilities. One award of $4,000 will be made in 2010.
